It would help if you said which train he is coming in on. Both the Empire Builder and The California Zephyr are being affected by the wild fires in the west. However, both are guaranteed connections to The Capitol Limited. How late is your son's train? Sometimes Amtrak finds it easier to hold the connecting train in Union Station. Many times Amtrak will arrange bus service between trains in which case he will make his connection without coming into Chicago. Perhaps they will work with him for an overnight hotel.
